.DISCUSSION...

KEY MESSAGES:

- Today will be mainly dry across the region while areas of light rain overnight diminishes around sunrise this morning.

- A slow moving cold front will pass through NE Montana today and tonight. Freezing temperatures likely Sunday night and Monday morning.

- Rain is expected late tonight through Sunday morning. Most of the rain will be south of the Missouri River

WEATHER PATTERN OVERVIEW:

A cold front will move slowly across NE Montana today and tonight which will bring cooler temperatures over the weekend. Freezing temperatures are likely Sunday night and Monday morning.

A shortwave on SW flow aloft moves into the forecast area Saturday morning. Chances for light rain will start in some areas tonight but the main area of rain with this system is expected Saturday and Saturday night with a upper trough over Montana. Most of the rain with this system will be south of the Missouri River where the probability of 0.25 inch of rain is 40 to 70 percent while it will be 20 percent or less near the Canadian Border.

Chances for light rain will linger into Sunday morning south of the Missouri River. Then, skies will clear Sunday afternoon as high pressure moves into the area. Gusty NW winds may be high enough to require a Lake Wind Advisory on Sunday.

Clear skies and light winds Sunday night will allow for below freezing temperatures in most areas and some areas especially north of the Missouri River will have a hard freeze with low below 28 degrees.

Temperatures gradually warm back up next week as trough moves to the east and ridge builds into the area from the west.

FORECAST CONFIDENCE & DEVIATIONS:

No deviations from NBM in the forecast.

Confidence is high south and low north for precipitation Saturday and Saturday night.
