Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Raleigh NC 615 AM EDT Wed Sep 17 2025

.SYNOPSIS... Low pressure will drift along the Mid-Atlantic coast today, then linger while weakening through mid-week. High pressure will otherwise extend across the eastern US.

&&

.NEAR TERM /TODAY THROUGH TONIGHT/... As of 104 AM Wednesday...

Overcast with some spotty light rain NE this morning, remaining mostly cloudy this afternoon.

Partly to mostly sunny elsewhere.

The low pressure over the Mid-Atlantic will weaken but linger today and tonight well to our NE. The flow around the low pressure will continue to bring considerable cloudiness and spotty light rain to areas along the NC/VA border to near the Triangle this morning. QFP will be very light, less than a tenth of an inch. So, nothing significant. Skies will be partly to mostly sunny south and west of the Triangle including Fayetteville and most of the Triad to Charlotte. Highs should range from near 70 NE into the mid 80s southwest. Skies will become partly cloudy NE tonight with mostly clear skies elsewhere. Lows in the mid 50s to lower 60s N to S.

&&

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY AND THURSDAY NIGHT/... As of 104 AM Wednesday...

Dry and warmer.

Low pressure to the NE of the region will dissipate leaving high pressure in control. Expect mostly sunny and dry conditions Thursday and mainly clear and seasonable Thursday night. Highs return to the lower 80s NE ranging into the upper 80s south. Lows in the upper 50s north ranging into the mid 60s south.

&&

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/... As of 104 AM Wednesday...

Very warm to hot Friday and Saturday.

No significant rain expected.

Upper ridging will be in place bringing dry and warm weather Friday and Saturday. A weak upper level trough is expected to develop well west of the central Appalachians Sunday lingering into Tuesday. However, other than a small chance of showers close to the coast Sunday and Monday, central NC is expecting none. As for temperatures, the warmest temperatures will likely be on Friday and Saturday when mid to upper 80s are forecast. Lows will be in the 60s. Slightly cooler air will arrive Sunday with a backdoor front. Highs Sunday through Tuesday should be in the upper 70s to mid 80s north-central to south. Lows in the mid 50s to lower 60s.

&&

.AVIATION /12Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... As of 615 AM Wednesday...

24 Hour TAF Period: MVFR conditions will continue at KRWI and KRDU as low pressure lingers over the VA Tidewater this morning. This will result in moisture wrapping around the area of low pressure, with KRWI and KRDU possibly seeing some patchy light rain and/or drizzle through 21z today. KRWI is generally expected to remain MVFR through the day, with some IFR conditions (especially in and around areas of drizzle), while KRDU is likely to see some MVFR cigs today, but lifting to VFR by late morning. Otherwise, VFR conditions are expected at KGSO/KINT/KFAY.

Outlook: Areas of MVFR or IFR stratus may linger into Wed night at RWI and RDU. Otherwise, VFR should prevail Thu through Sun.
