Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Huntsville AL 1053 PM CDT Sun Sep 28 2025

...New NEAR TERM, SHORT TERM, LONG TERM...

.NEAR TERM... (Rest of tonight and Monday) Issued at 1053 PM CDT Sun Sep 28 2025

An uneventful night so far across the Tennessee Valley as current satellite shows mostly clear skies and the radar is clear of any rain. High pressure has helped keep drier air in place and the shower activity mentioned earlier in the day remained confined to the higher terrain areas to our east. The main impact tonight will be the potential for patchy fog, especially in and around river valleys. Overnight lows will be a few degrees warmer tonight, falling to the low to mid 60s.

We will maintain a dry forecast on Monday as high pressure continues to be the dominating factor here locally while Tropical Storm Imelda continues to draw closer to the Carolinas. This will increase rain chances closer to the Atlantic coast but the recent eastward trends in the track favor a drier forecast for us here locally. Highs in the mid to upper 80s with mostly sunny skies and light northeast winds will persist through the day tomorrow.

.SHORT TERM... (Monday night through Wednesday) Issued at 1053 PM CDT Sun Sep 28 2025

Upper ridging will become more amplified in the short term period as the tropical systems begin their sharp turn east and large scale subsidence sinks south over the eastern CONUS. This will result in near seasonable highs in the low/mid 80s and lows in the low to mid 60s. There is a very low chance (less than 20%) a stray shower or two could wander over eastern AL Tuesday afternoon as Imelda pivots east, but the majority of the area should remain dry with mostly sunny to occasionally partly cloudy skies depending on how far west the outer bands of Imelda track.

.LONG TERM... (Wednesday night through Sunday) Issued at 1053 PM CDT Sun Sep 28 2025

There will be little chance in the overall synoptic pattern as we head through the long term period. Some good news for those hoping for cooler temperatures is that with high pressure settling over the Northeast as we head toward the end of the week, cooler and drier air will be pushed southwest into the local area. Highs will drop into the upper 70s in some locations, especially in the higher terrain areas, with temps in the lower 80s elsewhere. With the drier airmass in place, we should see abundant sunshine for the later half of the week and pretty ideal weather for any outdoor plans. Overnight lows will fall as well, approaching the lower 50s Thursday and Friday nights. It does not look like we will hit the 40 degree mark quite yet, but it will feel noticeably cooler later this week!

.AVIATION... (00Z TAFS) Issued at 609 PM CDT Sun Sep 28 2025

VFR conditions are forecast through the TAF period at both terminals with light northeast winds and mostly clear skies. Some patchy fog may develop overnight but confidence is too low to include in TAFs at this time.
